The Case for Consistency

Bloom Growth is a Silver Partner of the FBR Summit 2023.

Consistency is the key to success in various aspects of life and business, and the onboarding process for new franchisees is no exception. When it comes to integrating new franchisees into your Brand, maintaining a consistent onboarding process is paramount. In this blog, we will explore the significance of consistency in onboarding new franchisees from an expert’s perspective and discuss the benefits it brings to both franchisees and the Brand.

The Importance of Consistency in Onboarding

Clarity and Expectations
Consistency in onboarding helps set clear expectations for new hires. I like to call these the “Absolutes for Success”. When the process is standardized, franchisees know what to expect, from the first day to their ongoing development within the Brand. This clarity is essential in building trust and reducing anxiety, enabling franchisees to focus on their roles and responsibilities.

Efficient Training
Consistency in training materials and methods streamlines the onboarding process. It ensures that all franchisees receive the same foundational knowledge, reducing the chances of information gaps or misunderstandings. Efficient training is crucial for getting new hires up to speed quickly and effectively. Constant feedback from your Brand Coaches is essential to maximizing and adjusting the training to meet the franchisees’ needs.

Improved Compliance
Many Brands have specific regulations and compliance requirements. Consistent onboarding ensures that all franchisees, regardless of their experience or location, receive the necessary compliance training. This reduces the Brand’s risk of non-compliance and potential legal issues.

Enhanced Brand Culture
Consistency in onboarding also helps reinforce and promote your Brand’s culture. When new franchisees experience a uniform onboarding process that reflects your values and mission, they are more likely to embrace and embody those principles in their work. This fosters a cohesive and aligned workforce.

Better Franchisee Engagement
A consistent onboarding process can enhance franchisee engagement. When franchisees feel that their company invests in their development and offers a structured onboarding experience, they are more likely to remain committed to their roles and stay with the Brand longer. If your Brand has a franchisee-led Brand Council or similar, introductions to these successful peers will further enhance the sense of community for your new franchisee.

Standardized Onboarding Materials
Develop a standardized set of onboarding materials, including welcome packets, training manuals, available technologies, and online courses. Ensure that these materials are up-to-date and accessible to all new franchisees.

Training for Onboarding Franchisees
Train your onboarding teams, including Brand coaches, HR personnel, and department managers, to follow the same onboarding process. Consistency starts with those responsible for guiding new franchisees. An overarching “Day in the Life” document goes a long way in mentally preparing and removing anxiety over the unknown for the franchisee.

Regular Evaluation and Improvement
Consistency doesn’t mean rigidity. Regularly evaluate your onboarding process, gather feedback from new franchisees, and make improvements based on their input and changing Brand needs.

Technology Integration
Leverage technology to maintain consistency. Implement onboarding software that can automate certain tasks, track progress, and ensure that every new hire follows the same path. I personally see every day how powerful the application and commitment to using these tools are in establishing the foundation for sustainable growth.

Personalization within Consistency
While maintaining a consistent process, allow for personalization. Tailor specific elements of the onboarding process to an individual’s role or background while keeping the core components consistent. What are their goals? To own multiple units within a given territory? Be an absentee owner? Knowing this upfront is crucial. And re-visiting this in the first year or two is also important. As the franchisee grows, their goals could change based on their experiences.

Conclusion

In the world of franchisee onboarding, consistency is the cornerstone of success. From providing clarity and setting expectations to fostering a cohesive Brand culture and boosting franchisee engagement, a consistent onboarding process brings numerous benefits. By following expert strategies and continuously improving your onboarding procedures, you can ensure that your Brand thrives with a talented, well-prepared group of franchisees. Remember, the journey to consistency may require effort and adaptation, but the results will be well worth it in the end.
